How do you recognise a liar?

Many everyday little lies never come to light. In practice, you can’t actually see whether someone is lying. For the everyday lies, this is okay, but in police investigations it can have dangerous consequences. Are there actually ways to detect lies, and if so – how? In any case, you don’t do so by watching out for sidelong glances, fidgeting and nervous behaviour.
