Psychosocial factors in functional gastrointestinal disorders

Joanna Kruimel, PhD
ass. professor of gastroenterology

ass. professor Carsten Leue
professor of hospital psychiatry

Many people have gastrointestinal complaints. Investigations often do not show visible abnormalities of the gastrointestinal tract: in that case a diagnosis of a functional gastrointestinal disorder is made, were a malfunction of the “gut-brain axis” can play a role. Kruimel and Leue give explanation and share experience on the importance of good communication between patient and doctor, with attention for psychosocial factors.
