Brain Organoids and Rett Syndrome

Lars Eijssen, PhD
assistant professor bioinformatics and systems biology

‘Brain organoids’, brain-like structures cultured in the lab, are an astonishing new tool for studying neurological disorders. Combined with high-throughput molecular screening and machine learning, we investigated the rare inherited disorder Rett syndrome. This has provided us with important clues about the malfunctioning of affected neurons and their mutual communication. This knowledge helps improve diagnostics and treatment.
