Maastricht in the Time of the Mosasaurus: New Research and Discoveries

Prof Leon Claessens, PhD
professor of paleontology and evolution

The limestone rocks of the Maastricht region are world famous. There’s even a geological time named after them, the Maastrichtian, which ended about 66 million years ago with the extinction of the mosasaurs and dinosaurs. Active geological and paleontological research still takes place on the Cretaceous limestone deposits of the Maastricht region. Professor Claessens takes you on a tour from centuries of scientific developments to the latest excavations this summer.
