OPENING: Friday 9 SEPTEMBER

Before the party really gets started at all the locations, there’s a central opening to the festival. The opening speech by our rector Pamela Habibović is followed by a concert by the Ukrainian bayan, bandoneon and classical accordion player Oleg Lysenko, so we can reflect for a moment on the war occupying everyone’s thoughts at the moment.

He plays the suite Five Views on the Land of the Gulag Archipelago by V. Vlasov. It is the first piece of music for a bayan based on socio-political events in the former Soviet Union.

Following his training at the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy in Kiev and the Messiaen Academy in Rotterdam, Oleg Lysenko (1974, Ukraine) specialised in Argentinian tango on bayan and bandoneon at Codarts Rotterdam.Oleg has a preference for cross-over projects in which visual arts, literature and music meet and complement one another. He has developed such projects with writer and visual artist Armando, and writers, journalists and cinematographers including Stefan Hertmans, Cherry Duyns and Peter d’Hamecourt.
